Four Square Breathing
Stress is a significant driver of chronic health issues. The body doesn’t know the different sources of stress.
Having tools to reduce stress is important. Common stress reducing practices include meditation, gentle movement, laughing, dancing, journaling and breathing techniques. We will learn Four Square Breathing today. This simple breathing technique can be done anywhere and it is very simple.
Follow these instructions for Four Square Breathing:
- Sit down (if you are able) with your feet flat on the floor
- Inhale for 4 seconds
- Hold this inhale for 4 seconds
- Exhale for 4 seconds
- Hold this exhale for 4 seconds
- Repeat this 4 times
That's it! With this simple technique, you will switch your nervous system from the sympathetic "fight-or-flight" mode to the parasympathetic "rest-and-digest" state.
